As happens with all major disasters, fraud perpetrators are finding ways to use the fear and chaos associated with the COVID-19 virus to enrich themselves. Phishing emails, fraudulent phone calls and hacking attacks on employees working from home are already common. If the government begins sending checks to Americans, crooks are likely to do whatever they can to profit. You can protect yourself and your company by screening phone calls, deleting suspicious emails and watching out for charity fraud. If a nonprofit asks for a donation, verify its tax ID number with the IRS and its reputation with an online watchdog group.
